Canadian Citizenship Test
What is the format of the Canadian citizenship test?
Quick answer
The Canadian citizenship test is usually a self-administered online test of 20 multiple-choice and true/false questions completed in 45 minutes. In some cases, it may be conducted in person or as an oral interview with a citizenship officer instead.
The written test
Most applicants take a test of 20 questions, now usually self-administered online. The questions are multiple-choice or true/false and are based on the official Discover Canada guide. You have 45 minutes to answer all 20 and you need at least 15 correct (75%) to pass.
Oral hearing
Some applicants -- including those who do not pass the test within their allowed attempts, or in certain other circumstances -- will be assessed by a citizenship officer in an oral hearing. The officer asks questions verbally and evaluates your knowledge of Canada. Preparing the same material serves you well for both formats.
Based on Discover Canada
Every question comes from "Discover Canada: The Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship", the official IRCC study guide. Nothing outside this guide is tested. Knowing all five chapters thoroughly is the most direct route to passing.
