Canadian Citizenship Test
Who needs to take the Canadian citizenship test?
Quick answer
You must pass the Canadian citizenship knowledge test if you are applying for citizenship and are between 18 and 54 years old. Applicants under 18 or aged 55 and over are exempt from the written test.
The 18--54 age requirement
IRCC requires applicants in the 18--54 age range to write the citizenship test. The test covers knowledge of Canada from the official Discover Canada guide -- its history, values, institutions, and symbols.
Who is exempt
Applicants under 18 years of age and those 55 or older at the time of application do not need to write the knowledge test. In some cases, applicants with serious medical or physical conditions may also be exempt with supporting documentation.
Language requirements
Applicants aged 18--54 must also demonstrate adequate knowledge of English or French. This is assessed separately from the knowledge test. If the citizenship test applies to you, start preparing early so the knowledge portion is the easy part of your application. Confirm current requirements on canada.ca.
